About Tamarindo Backpackers
Located in a former Hacienda in Tamarindo, we are a traveler’s hostel promoting a fun, relaxed vibe with a social atmosphere. We get many backpackers, but also a wide variety of ages, nationalities, solo, group and family travelers. We operate a surf school out of the hostel for beginner-to-intermediate surfers with daily group and private lessons. We also offer custom surf trips along Guanacaste’s coastline.
About The Owners
It all started in 2013. Before Tamarindo Backpackers, I worked in London as an international project finance lawyer. Originally from Chicago, I moved to England in 2005 to study and lived there for nine years. I suddenly realized that constant stress and long hours of corporate law was not for me. I wanted more out of life, so I came to the hostel as a guest in April 2013. I instantly fell in love with the beauty and vibe of the town and the hostel. I returned to London to quit my job, sell my house and moved to Tamarindo. The rest is history! Living in Costa Rica is my dream come true. I enjoy swimming in the ocean, doing yoga and exploring nature with my partner Elias and our son Kai.
I love the hostel for the stories we share and the people from around the world. My goal for each guest is that you leave feeling like you are a part of our backpacker family. We want to show you a great time, introduce you to new friends and help you enjoy all the beauty that Costa Rica has to offer!
Hey guys! My name is Elias. I’m from Venezuela and I’ve been living in Tamarindo for nearly four years. I started surfing in Venezuela with my friend when I was 16 and it instantly became my passion. I moved to Canada in 2009 to escape the violence and unrest in my country. I was so happy when I found a community of surfers on the Great Lakes. But after four years of surfing in freezing cold lakes, I knew it was time for a change. In 2013 I left Canada and realized my long-time dream of living in Costa Rica and surfing in the warm ocean water every day.
I stayed at Tamarindo Backpackers as a guest and then I started working with Anne offering surf lessons for the hostel guests. We work really well together and now I run my surf school SALT – Surf as Life Therapy from Tamarindo Backpackers. I love teaching and I want to share the stoke with all of my students. Tamarindo is the perfect place to try surfing for the first time, so book a lesson and let’s catch some waves!
